Packaging is the last decision most founders make and the first thing a customer ever touches. On a manufacturing floor, it is not a cosmetic choice you bolt on at the end. The container decides four things at once: whether the product survives its shelf life against moisture, light, and oxygen; how the customer takes a dose; which fill line the run can go on; and where your component minimums and launch timeline actually land.
That last part surprises people. A capsule and a powder can sit in near-identical pouches on a shelf and still be two completely different manufacturing jobs behind the seal. The pack you picture is tied to equipment, to suppliers, and to a first commitment you may not have counted on.
This is how to choose primary packaging from the floor of a US contract manufacturer that runs packaging and fulfillment as part of the job: the trade-offs the packaging-supplier pages skip because each of them only sells you one shape.
One boundary first. This is a packaging and manufacturing guide. Barrier packaging keeps moisture, light, and oxygen away from actives that would otherwise degrade (a shelf-life and product-quality statement, not a health claim). Short answer. Supplement packaging is really a stack of decisions: the primary container (bottle, pouch, stick pack, blister, jar, can), the material and its barrier (plastic, glass, foil laminate), and the closure (screw cap, child-resistant, dropper, pump, plus tamper evidence). You choose it by what the product needs to stay good, how it’s dosed, and where it sells. Then one commercial fact governs your first run: stock components carry no supplier wall in front of a small batch, while custom containers and custom print carry supplier minimums, often in the low thousands.

Packaging has three jobs: protect, dose, sell
“How to choose” gets easier when you stop thinking about shapes and start with what the package has to do. Every primary pack is judged on three jobs, and most bad choices come from optimizing one and forgetting the other two.
Protect. The package is the barrier between your actives and the three things that age them: moisture, light, and oxygen. Moisture is the most common failure: it cakes powders, softens gummies, clouds tablets, and speeds the reactions that erode potency. Light degrades photosensitive actives (many vitamins, some botanicals and oils). Oxygen oxidizes fats, oils, and sensitive nutrients. Different products need different amounts of each barrier, and the number that ties them together is shelf life: the pack has to hold the product to its expiration date, which is exactly how a shelf life is set and proven in the pack the product actually ships in.
Dose. The pack decides how a customer takes the product and whether the dose is controlled by you or by them. A capsule in a bottle carries its own dose. A dropper or pump meters a liquid. A single-serve stick delivers one exact serving. A scoop-and-pour jar hands the dosing to the customer, which is fine for a protein but a problem for anything potent measured in small amounts.
Sell. The pack is your shelf presence and your branding surface, and the sales channel quietly rewards or punishes the choice after the sale. A marketplace listing lives on remaining shelf life at check-in and on a pack that survives a distribution center. A retail shelf wants a familiar, sturdy silhouette. A checkout impulse buy wants a grab-and-go single serve. Same product, different pack, because the channel changed.
Hold all three in view at once. A gorgeous custom bottle that lets light through and delays your launch by a tooling run has optimized “sell” and lost “protect” and “dose.”
What goes in what: the format-to-package map
The most common search behind this article is a simple one (bottles versus pouches versus sachets), so here is the honest map of which primary packs actually fit which formats, and why. A few pairings deserve more than a table cell.
Blister packs are the quiet moisture champion for pills. Each capsule or tablet sits in its own sealed cavity behind foil, so the product only meets air at the moment it’s pushed out. For a moisture- or oxygen-sensitive tablet, that per-dose isolation protects potency better than a bottle opened and re-opened for ninety days. The trade is cost and a different, unit-dose look (and, like any custom-formed pack, tooling behind it).
Dropper and pump bottles are a fill decision as much as a package. A liquid in a small dropper bottle is a precise, low-volume fill; the same formula in a larger dosing bottle is an easier one. The closure has to seal against a liquid that will be shipped and tipped. Stick packs and sachets are a flow problem wearing a package. A single-serve stick declares one serving on its face, so every fill has to be accurate and the powder behind it has to flow cleanly at speed on automated form-fill-seal equipment. Choosing a stick reaches back into the formula. That engineering (blend uniformity, flow, single-serve fill accuracy) is its own subject in how powders and single-serve sticks are filled; the packaging point here is only that the pack and the blend are one decision, not two.
Materials: the barrier-and-cost trade
Under the shape sits the material, and the material is where barrier, weight, and cost trade against each other. There is no “best”; there is a best fit for what your product needs to keep.

Two rules cut through the table. First, if an active is light-sensitive, opacity is not optional: amber glass, opaque HDPE, or a foil laminate, not clear PET. Second, glass buys you an inert premium barrier but you pay for it twice, in freight weight and in breakage risk through a distribution channel, so it earns its place on a premium or genuinely reactive product rather than by default.
The closure is half the package
The container gets the attention; the closure does half the work and drives a surprising share of the decisions. A pack is only as sealed as its cap.
Screw caps and liners. The standard closure, usually paired with an induction-sealed inner liner, the foil disc a customer peels off. That seal is your first line against moisture and your visible proof the pack is untouched.
Child-resistant closures. For some products this is not a style choice, it is a requirement. As of mid-2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission enforces the Poison Prevention Packaging Act, and its packaging regulation (16 CFR 1700.14) requires child-resistant packaging for dietary supplements that contain the equivalent of 250 mg or more of elemental iron per package (above set concentration thresholds, and with narrow exceptions such as iron present only as a colorant). If your formula carries meaningful iron, that requirement decides your closure before aesthetics do. Whether it applies to your exact product, and what else a channel or a retailer requires on top, is a determination for your regulatory counsel; we build to the packaging specification you confirm.
Tamper evidence. An induction seal, a shrink band, or a breakaway ring is how a customer sees the pack was never opened. Bottled supplements ship with tamper evidence as standard practice, and marketplaces and retailers frequently expect it, so treat it as a default rather than an upgrade for anything on a shelf.
Droppers, pumps, and spouts. Liquid closures that also meter the dose. A dropper for a tincture, a pump for a serum-style liquid, a spout for a larger bottle. Each is a component with its own supplier, and a custom dropper or pump carries its own minimum.
Desiccants and oxygen absorbers. Not closures exactly, but the small packets or built-in canisters that ride inside a bottle to hold moisture or oxygen away from the product across its shelf life. For a hygroscopic powder or a sensitive tablet, the desiccant is part of the packaging spec, not an afterthought.
The point is that “a bottle” is never just a bottle. It is a bottle, a cap, a liner, maybe a child-resistant mechanism, maybe a dropper, maybe a desiccant: each a component, each from a supplier, each with a minimum. Which brings us to the number that governs your first run.
Stock vs custom: where the packaging minimum actually bites
Ask a manufacturer for a minimum order quantity and you get one number that is quietly doing two jobs: the finished-unit run the line will fill, and the component minimums outside suppliers set for the parts that go into it. Packaging is where the second number bites hardest, because packaging is mostly bought-in components. The full decomposition is worked through in your MOQ is really two numbers; on the packaging surface it comes down to one fork.
Stock components. A bottle, cap, jar, or dropper the manufacturer already stocks or can pull from a supplier’s standing catalog. There is no supplier wall standing in front of a small run: a bottled liquid pilot can start in the hundreds of units when compatible stock containers are on hand. Fewest minimums, fastest route to a first run, no tooling.
Custom containers. Your own molded bottle shape, a custom jar, a custom pouch, a custom dropper. A custom mold or die is tooling (a one-time build with its own lead time and cost), and the supplier then sets a minimum on the run, commonly in the low thousands, because that is the smallest lot they will mold or form. Two walls, not one: the tooling and the minimum.
Custom print. Even on a stock container, your artwork means a custom print run (labels, printed pouch or stick film, or cartons), and the printer sets a minimum of its own, again commonly in the low thousands, regardless of how few units you are filling today. Getting that artwork right so it runs clean is its own step, covered in getting your label print-ready.
Here is the trap in a single blended “MOQ.” A shop can quote you “2,000 units” when your finished run is 300, simply by passing a label printer’s or a bottle molder’s minimum through to you without naming it. You end up unable to tell whether the number is a production limit that falls on a bigger run or a supplier limit that will not move no matter how you ask. The fix is to see the packaging line items broken out, which is how how manufacturing minimums work prices them, and how any honest quote should read.
The hybrid move: a custom look on a stock container
There is a move that gets you a distinct, on-brand product without the tooling and the container minimum, and it is the one most first runs should make: put a custom label on a stock container.
A stock bottle or jar carries no supplier wall in front of a small run and needs no mold. Your differentiation rides on the label (the surface a customer actually reads), which you print custom. That collapses your packaging minimums down to a single one you control: the label print run. And that overage is not waste. With locked artwork and a plan to reorder, banked labels are pre-bought inventory that skip the print minimum and setup on your next several runs, which is a big part of why reorders run faster than a first run.
Here is the contrast on paper. Take a bottled supplement and a 300-unit first run, and compare the two packaging paths.

Neither path is wrong. Path B is the right call when the container shape is the brand (a bottle silhouette a customer would recognize blindfolded), and you are ready to commit to the volume and the tooling that a custom mold requires. Path A is the right call for almost every first run and market test: you get a custom-looking product, your only real minimum is a label order you will use up across reorders, and you have committed nothing to a mold for a product still proving itself. Start on stock, earn your way to custom tooling.
How your package changes the fill line and the launch clock
Two consequences ride along with the packaging choice, and both are easy to miss until they bite.
The pack decides the fill line. A liquid bottle runs on liquid filling and capping. A single-serve stick or a powder pouch runs on automated form-fill-seal. A blister runs on blister-sealing equipment. A ready-to-drink can runs on a canning line. These are different machines, and a manufacturer’s real capability is which of them it runs. The honest version of “can you make this” is often “which fill line does your pack require, and who runs it.”
The pack sets the long pole on your launch. Stock components are the fastest path to a first run because nothing has to be built or printed from scratch. Custom print adds label or film lead time; custom containers add tooling on top (a mold or die gets built before a single unit is formed), which can push a launch from weeks toward months. That is not a reason to avoid custom, but a reason to decide it early, so tooling and print run in parallel with formulation and testing rather than starting the clock after everything else. If speed matters most, stock containers plus a custom label is again the shortest route.
A packaging checklist to bring to any manufacturer
Run your product through these before you commit. They pull the packaging decisions (and the hidden minimums) into the open. Bring them to any manufacturer, Apollo included.
- What does the product need protected from (moisture, light, oxygen), and does this pack and closure deliver it to the expiration date? Match the barrier to the actives, not to the look.
- Is the container stock or custom? Stock means no supplier wall in front of a small run. Custom means tooling plus a supplier minimum you will own.
- Am I paying for a custom container, or can a custom label on a stock container get me the same brand? For most first runs, the label carries the brand and skips the mold.
- What’s the minimum on each custom component (label, bottle, closure, dropper, carton), listed separately? A single “2,000 units” is often a label printer’s or bottle molder’s minimum in disguise.
- If a component minimum is above my run, do I own the excess, and is it disclosed before I commit? The honest answer is yes and yes, in writing. And with locked artwork, the excess is reorder stock.
- Does my formula trigger a child-resistant or tamper-evidence requirement for my product or channel? Iron content and retailer or marketplace rules can decide the closure before you do. Confirm the compliance call with your counsel.
- Which fill line does this pack require, and does the manufacturer run it? The pack picks the equipment; the equipment is the real capability question.
- Will the product be tested in the pack it actually ships in? A shelf life is only proven in the final package, not a stand-in.
Answer these and you are choosing packaging deliberately instead of inheriting it on an invoice.
