Getting Your Label Print-Ready: Dielines, Artwork, and What Your Manufacturer Needs

Your label is the last file you send and the first thing a customer ever touches. On a manufacturing floor it is also the piece most likely to hold up a finished run, not because the design is hard, but because the file isn’t built the way a press needs it. A beautiful label that isn’t print-ready is a stalled production run wearing nice typography.
“Print-ready” is not a vibe. It’s a short list of technical facts about the file itself: it sits on the printer’s dieline, it has bleed and a safe zone, it’s in the right color space at the right resolution, the fonts are locked, and it’s saved in a format the press can run without touching it. Miss one and the file bounces back for a fix. While it’s out for that fix, the label print run hasn’t started, and on many products the fill line is waiting on printed labels before it can pack a single unit.
This is what a print-ready supplement label actually requires, written from the floor of a US contract manufacturer that runs packaging and fulfillment as part of the job. It’s the supplement-specific version the generic print-shop guides skip: not just bleed and DPI, but the Supplement Facts panel that has to survive the press at legal type size, the barcode that has to scan, and the printer’s minimum that quietly sets one of the two numbers behind your quote.

Short answer. A print-ready supplement label is a file the press can run untouched: built on the printer’s dieline, with bleed past the trim and critical content inside a safe zone, in CMYK at 300 DPI or as vector art, fonts outlined and images embedded, saved as a press-ready PDF (often PDF/X-1a). On a supplement it also has to keep the Supplement Facts panel at its legally required type size, carry a barcode that scans, and match the artwork you approved. The label’s own printer minimum, commonly in the low thousands, is a separate number from the units your line will fill.

What “print-ready” actually means
Strip away the software and print-ready comes down to six properties of the file. Every one of them has a job, and every one of them is a reason a file gets sent back.

These conventions are print-industry standard, not FDA rules, and the exact numbers move with the printer, the press, and the label’s shape. A tiny neck band and a large wraparound bottle label do not carry the same bleed. That’s why the first move is never “open a blank canvas”; it’s “get the dieline.”
The rest of this guide walks each of these from the floor, then adds the three things a supplement label carries that a coffee bag or a candle label doesn’t: a regulated facts panel, a scannable barcode, and a print-run minimum that becomes part of your quote.
Start from the printer’s dieline, not a blank canvas
A dieline is the template that defines your label’s finished shape: the trim (where it’s cut), the bleed (where art must extend past the cut), and the safe zone (where nothing important should sit). Your printer generates it for the specific die that will cut your labels. Design onto that file and your artwork is correct by construction. Design onto a rectangle you sized yourself and you’re guessing at the one thing you can’t afford to guess at.
Three things happen at the die that the dieline exists to protect against:
- The cut isn’t perfect. Die-cutting has a mechanical tolerance: the blade lands within a small range, not on a laser-exact line. Bleed covers the “cut slightly outside” case so no unprinted paper shows. The safe zone covers the “cut slightly inside” case so your text and logo aren’t clipped. Skip either and a normal, in-spec cut can ruin the label.
- The shape fights you. Round labels, oval labels, neck bands, and rounded corners all trim in ways a rectangle doesn’t. Content that looks centered on a flat artboard can sit crooked once the label is on a curved bottle. The dieline shows you the real usable area.
- Wraparound labels overlap themselves. A full-wrap bottle label has a seam where the end laps over the start. Anything critical (a barcode, a seam of the facts panel, a key line of copy) that lands in that overlap gets distorted or hidden. The dieline marks the overlap so you can design around it.
The practical rule: extend every background, color field, and image to the full bleed, and pull every piece of content you can’t afford to lose (logo, claims, the facts panel, the barcode, directions) inside the safe zone. When in doubt, the printer’s template wins over any number in this article.

Color, resolution, and file format: the three that bounce a file
If a file comes back for a fix, it’s usually one of these three. They’re unglamorous and they’re non-negotiable.
Color: CMYK, with spot colors called out. Presses print in CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black), not the RGB your screen uses. A file left in RGB either gets auto-converted (and your colors shift, often the brand blue going flat or the vibrant green dulling) or gets rejected. Convert to CMYK yourself so you see the real color, and for a brand-critical color, the exact shade a customer recognizes on a shelf, specify a named spot color (a Pantone) rather than trusting a four-color mix to land the same on every run. Consistency across reorders depends on it.
Resolution: 300 DPI at final size, or vector. Raster images (photos, textures, flattened logos) need to be 300 dots per inch at the size they print: a 300 DPI image blown up to twice its size is really 150 DPI and will look soft or pixelated. Logos, type, and line art should be vector wherever possible, because vector has no fixed resolution and stays crisp at any size. The common failure is a logo pulled off a website at screen resolution and dropped onto a print file; it looks fine on the monitor and fuzzy on the bottle.
File format: a press-ready PDF, fonts and images locked in. The safe hand-off is a PDF built to a print standard: PDF/X-1a is the most widely supported, requiring CMYK/spot color only, all fonts embedded, transparency flattened, and defined trim and bleed boxes so nothing is left to interpretation. Two habits prevent the most common late surprises: outline your fonts (convert text to curves) so the printer doesn’t need your exact font file and can’t substitute the wrong one, and embed your images rather than linking them, so nothing goes missing between your machine and the press. A file that references a font or an image the printer doesn’t have is a file that prints wrong or not at all.
None of this is exotic. It’s the difference between a file that runs and a file that generates an email. Get these three right and most of what stalls a label is already behind you.
The Supplement Facts panel has to survive the press
Here’s where a supplement label stops being like any other label. A candle can print its type at whatever size looks good. A dietary supplement can’t; the Supplement Facts panel and the required information around it have legally set minimums, and a design that shrinks them to fit crosses from “tight layout” into “non-compliant label.” This is the collision the generic artwork guides never mention, because they aren’t printing regulated products.
Two sets of rules meet on your label, and both are worth knowing before you scale the panel down to make room for the logo. The figures below are current to the primary source as of mid-2026; they change, and how they apply to your specific product is a question for your counsel.
The information-panel type-size floor. Under FDA’s labeling rules (21 CFR 101.2(c) and (f)), required information on the information panel (the Supplement Facts box, the ingredient list, and the name and place of business) generally must be at least 1/16 inch in height, measured by the lowercase letter “o,” and no more than three times as high as it is wide. FDA’s Dietary Supplement Labeling Guide restates this as print that is “prominent, conspicuous and easy to read,” contrasting sufficiently with the background. One narrow exception gets misread constantly: the 1/32-inch floor in 21 CFR 101.2(c)(2) applies only to individual serving-size packages of food served with meals in restaurants, institutions, and on passenger carriers, and not intended for sale at retail; it does not cover a retail supplement in a tiny bottle. A small retail package that can’t hold 1/16 inch doesn’t drop to 1/32 inch by default; it needs a separate FDA exemption (21 CFR 101.2(f)). Below the 1/16-inch floor, the text isn’t just hard to read; it’s out of spec.
The Supplement Facts box itself. The panel has its own formatting rules under 21 CFR 101.36. As of mid-2026 it must be enclosed in a box using hairlines (101.36(e)(2)); the title “Supplement Facts” must be set larger than all other print in the box and bolded (101.36(e)(1)); and the type must be black or one color on a white or other neutral contrasting background (101.36(e)(3)). The size floors are explicit: body information no smaller than 8 point, column headings no smaller than 6 point (101.36(e)(4)), and on small packages under 12 square inches, everything in the panel no smaller than 4.5 point (101.36(i)(2)(i)).
Now put that next to what a print shop will tell you. Generic label guides cite a print-legibility rule of thumb: roughly 4.5-point minimum for positive text, 6-point for reversed (light-on-dark) text. That’s a press floor, about what a press can hold cleanly. It is not the supplement floor. On a standard-size package your Supplement Facts body has to be 8 point (not 4.5), so a designer who shrinks the panel to the “4.5-point minimum” the printer mentioned has quietly breached the panel rule. And because the panel must be one color on a contrasting background, the trendy move (reversing the panel out of a dark brand color, or setting it in a soft gray to look premium) can put you offside on contrast, not just on taste.
The takeaway from the floor: the facts panel is the one element you size to the rule first and design around second. If it won’t fit at its required type size, the answer isn’t to shrink it; it’s a bigger label, a different container, or a panel layout change your regulatory reviewer signs off on. This one is narrower: whatever the panel says, it has to print at a size and contrast the rule allows, and the version that goes to plate has to be the version you approved.
Your barcode is artwork too, and it has to scan
A barcode is not a decoration you paste in at the end. It’s a functional part of the artwork, and if it doesn’t scan, the label is defective no matter how good it looks. Retail scanners and marketplace receiving desks don’t grade your design; they either read the code or they don’t.
A few rules keep a barcode readable through a print run:
- Protect the quiet zone. Every barcode needs clear space on both sides (the “quiet zone”) so the scanner can find the start and end of the code. Crowd it with artwork or a border and scans start failing. On a UPC, the quiet zone is part of the symbol, not optional white space you can trim.
- Keep it flat and off the seams. A barcode bends with the bottle. Place it on the flattest available area, and keep it away from the neck curve, the shoulder, and (on a wraparound label) the overlap seam. A code that spans a fold or a steep curve reads unreliably or not at all.
- Dark bars on a light background, no reversing. Scanners read dark bars against light space. Don’t reverse a barcode (light bars on dark), and be careful with color: some colors, red especially, can read as background to a scanner and make the bars disappear. Black on white is the safe default.
- Don’t shrink it past the point of reliable scanning. Barcodes have a nominal size with a magnification range: GS1, which administers the UPC/GTIN system, commonly cites roughly 80% to 200% of nominal for retail codes. Squeeze one below the point where the bars hold their proportions in print and scanners struggle.
- Test-scan the printed proof, not the file on screen. A barcode can look perfect in the PDF and fail on paper because of ink spread, substrate, or contrast. Scan an actual printed label before you approve the full run.
One supplement-and-ecommerce wrinkle: the retail barcode (a UPC/GTIN from GS1) and the Amazon FNSKU used for FBA are different codes doing different jobs, and a unit going into Amazon’s fulfillment network generally shouldn’t show two scannable retail barcodes competing for the scanner. How that gets handled (printing the FNSKU into the label versus applying it in packout) is a fulfillment decision; FBA prep and marketplace-ready packout covers it, and marketplace policies here change, so confirm current requirements for your channel as of the date you print.
The label print run is one of your two MOQ numbers
This is the part the artwork guides never connect, and it’s the part that decides how many labels you actually buy. A custom label (your artwork, your die) is printed by an outside label printer who runs it in their own lot sizes and carries their own minimum. That minimum is commonly in the low thousands, and it is a separate number from the finished units your production line will fill. Your file is what unlocks that print run. Until the file is print-ready, the print run can’t start; once it’s approved, you’re committing to the printer’s minimum, not to your run size.
That’s why an honest quote shows the label print run on its own line. Blend it into a single “MOQ” and you can’t tell whether the number in front of you is the line’s finished-unit minimum or the label printer’s minimum in disguise. Here’s the shape of it, using illustrative numbers to make it concrete:

The 1,700 leftover labels aren’t waste; they’re your next several reorders, already bought at the better per-piece price a larger print run earns, and already through the file-and-proof step. That reframes the minimum: an unproven design you might still change turns banked labels into scrap, but a locked design you’ll reorder turns the “excess” into pre-paid inventory. A clean file starts that clock; a file that bounces resets it, and on a product whose fill line waits for labels, that delay is your whole launch, not just your label.
What your manufacturer checks before it goes to plate, and what your counsel signs off
There are two review passes on a label, and it helps to know which is which so nothing falls between them.
What a manufacturer reviews from the floor is print-readiness and match. On Apollo’s side that means: the file sits on the correct dieline with proper bleed and safe zone; it’s CMYK at print resolution in a press-ready format with fonts outlined and images embedded; the Supplement Facts panel and required information appear legible and at a workable size; the barcode is placed to scan and test-scans clean; and, critically, the artwork matches the product it’s going on. The label, the approved panel, and the batch’s Certificate of Analysis have to tell the same story: the same ingredients, the same amounts, the same net quantity, the same lot and expiration treatment the run will actually carry. A label that says something the batch record and CoA don’t support is a problem we catch before plate, not after packout.
What your counsel or regulatory reviewer signs off is compliance: whether your claims are permissible, whether the panel content is correct and current, whether your label meets every requirement for the markets and channels you sell into. That’s their call, not the manufacturer’s: requirements change, they vary by jurisdiction and by where and how you sell, and FDA does not pre-approve dietary supplement labels, so the brand owner carries responsibility for compliance (per FDA’s labeling guidance, as of mid-2026). The two passes are complementary, and the sequence matters: get the content and claims right with your regulatory reviewer before the artwork locks, because the most expensive label mistake is the one you find after the run. A relabel can cost more than the original print run: you pay for setup and plates twice, and you lose the time.
